Momotaro tomatoes are available year-round when grown in greenhouses. Outdoors tomatoes have a peak season in the summer.
Momotaro tomatoes were developed by the Takii Seed Company in Japan in the mid-20th century. Before their release, tomato varieties in Japan throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries were traditionally more acidic and were harvested young to protect e tomato’s delicate skin from being damaged in shipments. The young tomatoes were deemed flavorless and too acidic, leading many households throughout the country to avoid tomatoes altogether. Public perception began to change in the 1950s when cherry tomatoes were introduced from Europe and the United States. The small cultivars had tougher skin with increased disease resistance, allowing them to be shipped when ripe, developing improved flavors. The Takii Seed Company noticed the need for a hardier tomato variety in the Japanese market and began developing a new cultivar with a firmer nature, disease resistance, and flavor in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Over fifty tomato varieties were naturally crossbred and studied in the selection process, and it took six years before the research team had found a tomato with preferred hardiness.
Broccoli is available year-round, with a peak season in the late fall through early spring.
Broccoli was developed from an ancient, wild cabbage relative native to the Mediterranean region and Asia Minor. Thousands of years ago, the wild cabbage relative was selectively bred for many generations to exhibit improved traits for human consumption, including flavor, size, and texture. Experts believe the Etruscans, a civilization known for their horticulture, first brought domesticated versions of Broccoli from Turkey to Southern Italy sometime before the 1st century. Broccoli continued to be cultivated in Italy, developing Calabria Broccoli, the compact heads we are familiar with today, and the plants were introduced to France in the 16th century. Broccoli was also brought to England in the 18th century, where it was initially known as Italian Asparagus.
